The best time to visit China? Check the holiday calendar before the weather
Spring and autumn are good starting points. Before picking dates, check whether your trip falls in a week when much of China is travelling too.
Ask when to visit China and most people will say spring or autumn. Fair enough. A mild day makes walking around Beijing, Shanghai or Xi'an easier, but if it happens to fall in a holiday week, which is when plenty of other people have decided to do the same thing, the weather won't be your main concern.
Check when people are travelling, as well as what the weather will be like.
Pick your route, then check the national holiday calendar before settling on dates.

The short answer
For a first trip, try to keep your main travel days outside these holiday periods:
- Spring Festival, also called Chinese New Year
- The Labor Day holiday at the beginning of May
- The National Day holiday, often called Golden Week
You don't need to rule out a whole month. Moving your trip by a few days can make tickets easier to find and leave you with more hotels to choose from.
China peak travel windows to watch in 2027
Use these as planning windows while building your itinerary. The official 2027 adjusted holiday calendar had not yet been published when this guide was prepared, so confirm the final dates before booking non-refundable travel.
| Holiday | Planning window | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Spring Festival | 5 to 13 February 2027 | Very heavy intercity travel and some holiday closures |
| Labor Day | 1 to 5 May 2027 | Busy attractions, transport and short-break destinations |
| National Day | 1 to 7 October 2027 | One of the year's biggest domestic travel periods |
These are advance planning windows, not the final official adjusted working-day schedule. Holiday travel often begins before the first day off and continues after the final day.

Why holidays can matter more than weather
Public holidays put a lot of domestic travel into a few days. You can still visit, but more people want the same trains, rooms and attraction tickets. Expect:
- Tickets for popular intercity trains sell quickly.
- Timed-entry museums and major sights need earlier booking.
- Hotels cost more, and rooms in convenient locations can go first.
- Stations get busier. Leave more time for transfers and security.
If you're travelling during Golden Week, book earlier than you otherwise would.

Chinese New Year is not exactly like Golden Week
Spring Festival is China's most important family holiday. People travel home before it and back to work afterwards, so getting between cities is often the hard part. Once you're in a large city, though, some streets and metros may feel quieter, which can be a surprise if the train journey was packed, while small family-run restaurants and shops may close for several days.
If you're going specifically for Spring Festival, stay in one or two places. Check opening hours before heading out, and avoid an itinerary that depends on frequent intercity moves.
When is a good time to visit China
Beijing, Harbin, Yunnan and Hainan have very different climates. For a first trip, these periods are worth looking at, although which one suits you will still depend on where you're going and how much heat, rain or cold you're happy to put up with:
- Late March to late April: spring conditions in many destinations before the May rush.
- The second half of May: after Labor Day, though southern China may be warmer or wetter.
- Mid-to-late October: after National Day, with pleasant autumn weather in many areas.
- November: cooler, but often a good trade-off if you prefer fewer crowds.
Check the weather for each stop on your route. Southern China can be wet when northern cities are pleasant.

Already booked during Golden Week
Already booked? You don't necessarily need to cancel. A few changes to the itinerary can help.
- Book the difficult parts first. Prioritise intercity trains, domestic flights, hotels and timed-entry attractions.
- Stay longer in fewer places. Every city you remove from the itinerary is one less holiday transfer to arrange.
- Have a second choice. Save a quieter neighourhood, park or smaller museum near each major attraction.
- Keep essentials offline. Save your hotel name and address in Chinese, booking confirmations and your accomodation's phone number. Take screenshots before you need them.
The rule to remember
Check the holiday calendar before committing to your dates.
Choose the weather that suits your route within the dates you can travel. Then use the InBuddy checklist to prepare mobile data, payments, hotel details and the information you need offline.

Common questions
- Should I avoid China during Golden Week?
- It isn't unsafe, but it's more crowded and harder to book. If your dates are flexible, arrive after the National Day holiday.
- Is all of October crowded?
- No. The main nationwide peak is at the beginning of October. Crowds can ease once the holiday ends.
- Is Chinese New Year a bad time to visit?
- Not necessarily. If you want to see the celebrations, staying in one place makes sense. Getting between cities around the holiday is the difficult part.
