China 240-hour visa-free transit checker

Passing through mainland China on your way somewhere else? Check the main transit conditions for your trip, then confirm your documents and departure arrangements.

Policy checked 3 October 2026. This page uses a reviewed snapshot of official guidance.

Check your trip

This first release screens one entry and one selected stay area. It does not validate an entire itinerary or the operational availability of a port.

Routes involving other territories or regions require official checking. The checker does not decide whether they count as a separate destination.

Your trip details and results stay on this page. They are not saved or sent to InBuddy.

Immigration authorities decide temporary entry and your permitted stay. Confirm with your carrier and the departure port before travelling.

Trip details

Select an intended stay area to see its permitted limits.

NIA counts the visa-free stay from 00:00 on the day after entry, in China time. Check the actual departure date and time against the stay permitted by immigration. NIA conditions appendix. Overnight flights use the time they leave mainland China, not the time they reach your next destination.

Confirm your arrangements

The checker is unavailable

Read the official rules and the entry-port and stay-area lists below. We cannot return a screening result right now.

The four main conditions

  1. Your ordinary passport is on the eligible list. It must have at least three months of validity left, and you must meet the admission rules for your next destination.
  2. Your route continues to a different country or region. Compare the country or region immediately before mainland China with the one immediately after it.
  3. You hold an onward ticket with a confirmed departure date and seat. Your departure must fit the permitted stay period.
  4. You enter through an eligible port and stay within the permitted areas. Confirm that your planned departure port and route accept your transit arrangements.

The policy covers short visits such as tourism, business and visiting family. Work, study and news reporting require the appropriate approvals and visas.

A return trip is different

Think of the route as A → mainland China → C. A and C must be different countries or regions. A is where you come from immediately before entering the mainland. C is where you go immediately after leaving. Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan each count as a separate region for this check. Hunan official guide.

London → Shanghai → London returns to the same country and does not meet the third-destination condition. London → Shanghai → Tokyo passes that route check. Your passport, documents, entry port, stay area and timing still need to qualify.

Where you can enter and stay

The table expressly permits cross-province visits within its listed stay areas. This checker screens one selected stay area. For visits across several provinces, multiple mainland entries, uncertain connecting routes or any other complex itinerary, confirm with immigration and your carrier.

The entry list is not an exhaustive exit list. The table expressly allows exits at all open Guangdong ports. Confirm the suitability of your planned departure port and route.

Common questions

Is 240-hour transit the same as a normal visa-free visit?

No. This checker covers transit to a third country or region. Other visa-free entry arrangements have their own conditions. The app's passport guide can help you find the reference links for those routes. Official guidance.

Can I return to the same country?

Returning directly to A does not meet the different-destination check. Compare the countries or regions on either side of your mainland stay, even if the cities or airports differ. Official guidance.

Do Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan count?

Yes, official guidance includes them as third regions. Select each separately from mainland China. You still need permission to enter your next destination. Routes involving other territories or regions require official checking. Official guidance.

Does the clock start when my plane lands?

The NIA conditions appendix starts the visa-free stay at midnight after the entry day. Use China time, and follow the departure deadline immigration gives you. Official guidance.

Can I visit several provinces?

The official table permits travel across its listed stay areas. Some provinces allow only named cities or prefectures. This checker does not confirm a multi-stop itinerary. Official guidance.

Must I leave through one of the 65 entry ports?

The entry list is not an exhaustive exit list. The table specifically permits all open Guangdong ports for departure. Confirm the suitability of your own departure port and route. Official guidance.

Does a positive result guarantee entry?

No. Border authorities inspect your documents and decide temporary entry. A screening result cannot replace that decision or your carrier's document checks. Official guidance.

What if my passport is not eligible for this transit policy?

This tool cannot show a match under the 240-hour scheme. Check other official entry arrangements or the visa requirements for your passport. Official guidance.
